Saturday Photo Hunt: Wild
This is The Crossing of the Mara River, a part of the Great Migration on the Masai Mara. The wildebeestes, along with some zebra, line up single file for miles and miles. At the water's edge, one gnu (what we used to call wildebeeste, and much shorter to type!) will approach the river's edge, then panic and run to the back, while another takes his place as first in line. This fight between instinct and terror can go on for hours, and some days no gnu gets up the courage to cross. But once the first one goes, there is a stampede. After this picture was taken, about half the herd milled around for a while, then crossed the river back to where they had come from! About a third of that group crossed back one more time; the rest stayed, presumably to cross again the next day. After witnessing the chaos of The Crossing, we referred to gnus for the rest of our trip as "Bewildered-beestes." It was "wild" in every sense of the word.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Isn't it always the case that after one tries it the rest fells safe and follow. :)

I never figured that squirrels could climb buildings. I see them up a tree, but it was the first time that I saw them do that. So I had to get photos and send them to my family in Hawai'i.

Thanks for stopping by.

It's all political...

The herd mills around... then the watch the "gnus", and all stampede towards whatever they saw... Of course, once there, they can't seem to find a reason why they came, until the "gnus" tell them it's better over there... They follow the herd back and forth... until both sides look pretty much the same....
